Governor Stein Announces Key Appointments to NC Boards and Commissions

In a significant move to strengthen leadership across various sectors in North Carolina, Governor Josh Stein has announced a series of appointments to pivotal boards and commissions. These appointments reflect a diverse range of expertise and community involvement, showcasing the state’s commitment to inclusive and effective governance.

Appointments to Historical Commissions

Governor Stein has made key appointments to the Historic Bath Commission and the Historic Hillsborough Commission. Marlene McCabe from Beaufort County joins the Historic Bath Commission as an at-large member. Known for her work as a preacher and community leader, McCabe holds a psychology degree from Fayetteville State University and is deeply invested in public service.

On the Historic Hillsborough Commission, Ebony F. Bryant from Orange County is appointed as an at-large member. Bryant brings over 25 years of experience in higher education and professional development, notably from her tenure at Duke University School of Law. Additionally, Sheriff Charles S. Blackwood, a 45-year veteran in law enforcement and current chair of the North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission, and Elizabeth Frankenberg, a distinguished professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have also been appointed to this commission.

Health and Forestry Initiatives

The Governor has also focused on health and forestry with appointments to the Justus-Warren Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force and the North Carolina Agriculture and Forestry Awareness Study Commission. Paige Binfield from Wake County, representing Eat Smart, Move More NC, brings her extensive experience in government relations and community health to the task force. Meanwhile, Alton Perry from Wake County joins the Agriculture and Forestry Commission, where he continues his work empowering landowners through sustainable forestry initiatives.

Professional Boards and Community Service

In the realm of professional and community service, Hillary Shoreland Goodell, PE, from Wake County, has been appointed to the North Carolina Board for Licensing of Geologists. Goodell’s role as Southeast Operations Manager for ONE Environmental Group highlights her expertise in environmental engineering. On the North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition, Dr. Eugene W. Leung brings his medical expertise from his role at WakeMed Health and Hospitals.

Jean D. Wooten-Jiles, with over 30 years of experience in state government, joins the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board. Musheerah W. Ali, recognized for her advocacy of worker rights through the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, has been appointed to the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.

Financial and Technological Leadership

Alice D. Garland from Wake County has been named as a public member of the North Carolina Credit Union Commission, leveraging her experience with the North Carolina Education Lottery. Joey T. Ennis, serving as the chief information officer for the N.C. Department of Information Technology, joins the North Carolina Geographic Information Coordinating Council, poised to enhance the state’s digital infrastructure.

Cultural and Environmental Stewardship

Douglas J. Kahn from Wake County takes a seat on the North Carolina Holocaust Council. Kahn’s involvement with various community boards underscores his commitment to cultural preservation. John W. Watson, a retired legal professional and former chair of The Nature Conservancy of North Carolina, has been appointed to the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, continuing his dedication to environmental conservation.

Housing and Health Coordination

Leroy Douglas of Hertford County joins the North Carolina Roanoke-Chowan Regional Housing Authority and Redevelopment Commission, bringing his extensive experience in construction and property management. Dr. Gregory Moon of Orange County, a leader in health insurance strategy at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, has been appointed to the North Carolina State Health Coordinating Council.

Construction and Education Oversight

Chris Berg from Wake County, a structural engineering expert, will contribute his expertise to the North Carolina State Licensing Board for General Contractors. Lastly, Robert Ristagno Jr., an international business executive, joins the State Board of Proprietary Schools, bringing his experience in education and professional development to the board.
