Barry Schreier, a licensed psychologist, is recognized for his extensive experience in counseling psychology. He is currently a professor and leads the higher education program at UI’s Scanlan Center for School Mental Health. Schreier joined the University of Iowa in 2015, where he initially directed the University Counseling Service and contributed to the Counseling Psychology program. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Michigan and a PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

“The Office of the Ombudsperson plays a vital role for our students, faculty, and staff,” noted President Wilson. “Barry’s extensive expertise and background will help ensure that people who need advice and assistance will be well served.”

The role of the faculty ombudsperson is crucial, providing confidential, impartial, informal, and independent resolution services to the university community. This position reports directly to the president and is a half-time faculty appointment, spanning a four-year term.

Schreier is slated to commence his duties on July 1, after being selected from an internal pool of candidates. The search for this role was led by Megan Foley Nicpon, the Myron and Jacqueline Blank Endowed Chair in the College of Education and director of the UI’s Belin-Blank Center.

The University of Iowa’s Office of the Ombudsperson is dedicated to serving students, staff, and faculty, assisting in resolving a wide array of disputes.
