The City of Flint is launching an informative initiative aimed at empowering its residents with knowledge on estate and life planning. Through a newly established Lunch & Learn series, titled Taking Care of Tomorrow, Today, the city hopes to guide families and individuals in planning effectively for the future.
Organized by the Office of Public Health, these sessions will be held at the Mays Senior and Community Center on specific dates: May 21, June 4, June 18, July 9, and July 23, all from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Ashley Prew will facilitate the discussions, offering insights into key aspects of long-term planning and personal well-being.
The series aims to foster meaningful dialogue among community members while providing practical knowledge on important topics that affect personal and familial financial planning. As Ashley Prew notes, “Individuals often find themselves in probate court not because of crime, punishment, or civil disputes, but because of a debilitating illness or the death of a family member.” She emphasizes the need to understand, avoid, and navigate probate effectively to minimize family stress and financial burdens during challenging times.
Topics of Discussion
- Understanding the probate process and its implications after death
- Strategies to avoid probate
- The role and significance of wills
- Financial, medical, and durable powers of attorney
Mayor Sheldon Neeley echoes the importance of the series, stating, “This series is about making sure residents have the information they need today to protect themselves and their loved ones tomorrow.” He believes that through education and active community engagement, families can be better prepared for future challenges and make informed decisions with greater confidence.
The Lunch & Learn Series is accessible to the general public, with a special invitation extended to seniors, caregivers, and families. The program is strictly educational and does not offer legal advice or representation.
