Engaging Summer Opportunities in Dallas
As summer approaches, Dallas residents can look forward to a wide array of engaging activities and programs available throughout the city. From arts and culture to recreation and sports, there are numerous free or low-cost options to keep individuals of all ages entertained and enriched during the summer months.
Arts and Culture
The Culture Pass Dallas offers a collaborative effort between the Office of Arts and Culture and the Dallas Public Library. This initiative provides free access to various arts and culture programs for all Dallas Public Library Card Holders, ensuring everyone can enjoy the vibrant cultural scene throughout the city.

SMART Summer Challenge: May 30 to August 8
The Dallas Public Library invites kids aged 0 to 18 to participate in the SMART Summer Challenge. From May 30 to August 8, young participants are encouraged to read, discover, and create. For every 10 days of reading, children can earn up to three free books. Additionally, completing discovery and creative activities can win them free food coupons. A grand prize awaits those who meet all the summer goals.
Adults aren’t left out either. By logging 15 days of reading, adults can earn free books. Engaging in activities can also earn them prizes from a special goodie bag.
Free Summer Meals
In partnership with Education Potential Verified, free meals are available for children and teens aged 1-18. These meals are provided at various library branches from June 1 through August 7, funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program. No registration or proof of need is required.
Teen Programs
Teens can enjoy numerous activities through the Teen All Access Pass, which offers free entry to various attractions. This summer, the partnership with the State Fair of Texas allows teens free entry to the fair.
Additionally, the Best Buy Teen Tech Center provides a place for teens to develop skills and explore new ideas with technology. The center is a collaborative learning space designed for ages 12-17.
Dallas Park and Recreation
Dallas Park and Recreation maintains several community pools and aquatic centers. Residents can enjoy facilities like the Bahama Beach Waterpark. Swim lessons and scholarships are available to teach lifesaving skills.
The park department also offers a Counselor in Training program for youth aged 13-17 to gain job skills by supporting summer camps. Several sports leagues and outdoor adventure camps are also available, providing a mix of fun and learning.
Youth and Sports Programs
The Mayor’s Youth Sports Ticket Program allows Dallas youth aged 12-17 to attend various sports events for free. This initiative, in partnership with the Dallas Sports Commission, has distributed over 15,000 tickets. Mayor Eric L. Johnson notes, “Professional sports bind us together as a city… These athletes inspire civic pride and teach our youth the value of discipline, resilience, and teamwork.”
