Invitation for Delaware County Students to Join Junior County Council
Delaware County, PA — High school students in Delaware County have a unique opportunity to engage directly with local government through the Junior County Council program for the 2025–2026 academic year. Open to juniors and seniors from both public and private schools, this initiative aims to immerse young individuals in civic leadership and public service.
The program offers students the chance to witness local governance firsthand. Participants will attend bi-monthly Council meetings, participate in community outreach, and work alongside County leaders. The experience is designed to enhance skills in public speaking, teamwork, and civic engagement, providing a comprehensive view of how government functions at the local level.
County Council Chair Dr. Monica Taylor expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, “Through Junior County Council, we’re providing an exciting, invaluable pathway for young leaders to gain experience, build confidence, and understand the real impact they can have on their communities.” Vice Chair Richard Womack echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of student voices in government: “Young people deserve more than a seat — they deserve to be heard.”
This year, the County will select between two to six students to join the program. Interested candidates must submit their applications by July 18, with interviews scheduled to begin the week of July 21. Eligible applicants are those entering their junior or senior year at any high school in Delaware County.
Adam Cuica, a returning member and senior at Penncrest High School, shared his reflections on the program: “This program is helping me understand that government isn’t just policy—it’s people working every day to solve real problems.” Joy Thomas, another returning participant, encouraged students to apply, saying, “I would urge students from across the County to apply this summer and join us for what will be a truly rewarding year.”
The upcoming session will commence in mid-September. Participants will receive mentorship from County Council members and senior staff, gaining valuable insights into the workings of County operations and participating in activities aimed at increasing civic awareness and community engagement.
For those interested in applying, the application form is available on the County’s website at DelcoPA.Gov/Council/JuniorCCProgram.html.
