Tim Melton Steps In as Interim General Counsel for North Carolina’s State Treasury
The North Carolina Department of State Treasurer is poised for a leadership transition following the announcement that Tim Melton will serve as interim general counsel. This decision comes in the wake of Ben Garner’s resignation, who will be departing his role at the end of the month to pursue a position in the private sector.
Brad Briner, the State Treasurer, commended Garner for his contributions, noting, “Ben has been a valued member of our senior staff. During his six years as general counsel, his steady-handed legal guidance has been exemplary. Ben’s professional judgment has been sound and trusted, and his dedication to public service unwavering. He will be missed.” Garner’s tenure has been marked by reliable and trusted legal oversight, which will be a challenge to replace.
Tim Melton, who currently serves as assistant general counsel within the Retirement Systems Division, will assume the interim role. With nearly five years in his current position, Melton has been responsible for a wide range of duties, including the administration of retirement system laws and handling intricate litigation issues. Despite stepping into this temporary role, Melton has indicated he will not be seeking the permanent position.
Treasurer Briner expressed confidence in Melton’s abilities, stating, “Tim has been a great asset to the department and an integral part of the legal team. We are confident he will fulfill his new, temporary responsibilities in seamless fashion.”
Looking forward, the Department of State Treasurer plans to initiate a national search to identify a permanent successor for the general counsel position in the upcoming weeks.
