Raleigh bridge project awarded $18M contract for Durant Road upgrade

Major Infrastructure Development Underway: Key Raleigh Bridge Project to Begin

The landscape of Raleigh is set for a significant transformation with the commencement of a major bridge construction project. This development comes in the wake of an $18 million contract secured by the N.C. Department of Transportation, primarily funded by a substantial federal grant aimed at enhancing the S-Line corridor between Raleigh and Wake Forest.

Blythe Construction, a Charlotte-based company, successfully outbid seven other contenders to spearhead this ambitious venture. The project involves constructing a bridge that will carry Durant Road over an existing railroad track, effectively eliminating the current at-grade crossing. This change is expected to enhance safety measures and significantly reduce the noise associated with train horns in the area.

In an effort to minimize disruptions, traffic along Durant Road will be maintained throughout the construction period. The new bridge will be built adjacent to the current roadway, ensuring continuity for both vehicular and rail traffic.

The redesigned section of Durant Road will retain its current five-lane configuration, complete with sidewalks on both sides to facilitate pedestrian movement. Additionally, wide outer lanes will be included to accommodate bicycles, promoting a shared road usage model. The new alignment will also preserve existing access routes via Leslieshire Drive and Garvey Drive.

Construction is slated to begin as early as late July, with the project reaching substantial completion by the fall of 2026.
