Significant Overnight Closures Scheduled for I-26 in Asheville Area
This week, motorists traveling on Interstate 26 in the Asheville region should prepare for a series of overnight closures. These closures are essential for ongoing infrastructure projects, including road widening and maintenance work, and are scheduled to minimize daytime traffic disruption.
The closures will commence at 8 p.m. each night and conclude by 6 a.m. the following day. Detours have been arranged, and traffic signals along these routes will be optimized with extended green times to facilitate the increased traffic flow.
Monday Night Schedule
- Section Closed: I-26 East from Brevard Road (Exit 33) to Long Shoals Road (Exit 37)
- Detour Route: South on Brevard Road (N.C. 191) to Long Shoals Road (N.C. 146) east, rejoining I-26
Tuesday through Thursday Night Schedule
- Section Closed: I-26 East from Brevard Road (Exit 33) to Airport Road (Exit 40)
- Detour Route: South on Brevard Road (N.C. 191) to Airport Road (N.C. 280) north, returning to I-26
Mid-Week Closures
- Section Closed: I-26 West from U.S. 64 (Exit 49) to U.S. 25 (Exit 44) on Wednesday and Thursday
- Detour Route: West on U.S. 64 to north on U.S. 25, reconnecting with I-26
The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) advises drivers to exercise caution in these work zones and plan for additional travel time due to detours.
These closures are part of the ongoing I-26 widening projects in Buncombe and Henderson counties. The closures allow crews to perform diamond-grinding, concrete work on the Blue Ridge Parkway bridge, and preparations for an upcoming traffic shift in Buncombe County.
