Expanding Connectivity: North Carolina’s Broadband Initiative Approved
In a significant move towards enhancing internet access, Governor Josh Stein announced that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has given the green light to North Carolina’s ambitious plan to expand high-speed internet statewide. This initiative, under the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, will channel over $300 million from the state’s $1.53 billion allocation to bring high-speed connectivity to more than 93,000 homes and businesses.
Governor Josh Stein emphasized the initiative’s potential, stating, “Reliable high-speed internet opens doors of opportunity. Broadband empowers students to learn, helps businesses grow, supports our health care system, and strengthens our economy.” He underscored the importance of this funding in achieving the goal of connecting every household in North Carolina.
Teena Piccione, NCDIT Secretary and State Chief Information Officer, remarked on the strategic efforts behind the proposal. “My team has worked tirelessly to ensure we are using a strategic, data-driven, and technology-neutral approach so we can deliver lasting connectivity solutions for all North Carolinians,” she said, noting the focus on rural areas.
The broadband expansion projects are set to commence by mid-2026. Meanwhile, existing efforts funded by $670 million from the American Rescue Plan Act aim to connect over 250,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2026.
With this approval, North Carolina still holds more than $1 billion from its BEAD allocation. As the state awaits further guidance on fund usage, Governor Stein has appealed to federal leaders for flexibility in fund application. His letter proposes initiatives to enhance online safety, bolster infrastructure, and eliminate connectivity barriers, aiming to advance telehealth access and digital skills training.
