North Carolina Observes Workers’ Memorial Day, Honors 67 Lost Lives

North Carolina Honors Fallen Workers on Workers’ Memorial Day

In a solemn commemoration, North Carolina Labor Commissioner Luke Farley, alongside the N.C. Department of Labor, is uniting with workers, employers, and safety advocates across the state and country to observe Workers’ Memorial Day. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the 67 individuals who lost their lives in work-related incidents in North Carolina over the past year.

Workers’ Memorial Day offers an opportunity to honor those who have died while working and to renew the collective commitment to ensuring safe and healthy work environments for all employees in North Carolina.

“67 lives is not just a statistic,” stated Commissioner Luke Farley. “Behind that number are real people we’ve lost. Husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, children, and best friends who aren’t coming back. We know that work can be hard, work can be busy, but work should never be deadly.”

The mission of the N.C. Department of Labor remains steadfast in promoting safe workplaces through rigorous enforcement of safety standards, compliance support, and extensive training and outreach across various sectors.

“Today, on Workers Memorial Day, we rededicate ourselves at the North Carolina Department of Labor to making sure that every working man and woman goes home safe to their family at the end of the work day,” Farley emphasized.

In alignment with Workers’ Memorial Day, the N.C. Department of Labor urges businesses to reassess safety protocols, strengthen training, and foster open dialogues about risk prevention. Workers are equally encouraged to report unsafe conditions and utilize available safety training and resources.

Today, April 28, will see numerous events and remembrances nationwide, including moments of silence, memorial services, and educational initiatives focused on workplace safety.
