Key Developments from the N.C. Department of Transportation This Week

Major strides in transportation infrastructure and changes to DMV fees are among the major highlights from the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) this week. Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s visit and ongoing public engagements further underscore the state’s commitment to enhancing its transportation network.

Expansion of Passenger Rail Service

A significant development in North Carolina’s transportation landscape is the groundbreaking ceremony for the S-Line passenger rail. This new rail service, which will enhance connectivity between Raleigh and Richmond, Virginia, was inaugurated by Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, alongside state and local officials. Secretary Buttigieg’s visit also included inspections of other key projects such as the Blue Ridge Road improvements and the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway.

Changes in DMV Fees

As of this week, North Carolina residents will see an increase in various DMV fees. State legislation mandates a roughly 19 percent increase across 90 license and registration-related fees. For instance, the cost of a regular driver’s license will rise by $1 per year, leading to a $5 increase for a five-year license and an $8 increase for an eight-year license. Additionally, a new processing fee will be applied to credit and debit card transactions conducted in-person, online, and at kiosks.
