NC Launches “Speed Wrecks Lives” Campaign to Combat Road Dangers

Efforts to Curb Speeding on North Carolina Roads Intensify

RALEIGH – In a renewed call for road safety, the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program has joined forces with local law enforcement to launch a new campaign aimed at tackling speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

The initiative, dubbed “Speed Wrecks Lives,” was unveiled in a news conference at the N.C. Highway Patrol Training and Driving Facility. This program promises a statewide effort, with increased patrols across all 100 counties in North Carolina, running through July 26.

“Though we’ve come a long way in vehicle safety and passenger protection, speeding is still one of the leading causes of injuries and deaths on North Carolina roads,” stated NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “This campaign is a reminder that speed affects everyone, not just drivers.”

Aligning with the Vision Zero initiative, the campaign aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while promoting safer mobility for all. Vision Zero emphasizes shared responsibility in road safety, considering factors like road design and driver habits.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Marcus Bethea highlighted the importance of adhering to speed limits, saying, “Our goal is to save lives, and we’re putting all drivers on alert — the posted speed limit is the law.” He added that drivers can contribute to safety by reporting dangerous behavior to the State Highway Patrol using *HP (47) when safely parked.
