N.C. Parole Commission Reviews Dedric Brewington’s Case for Release

In a significant development within North Carolina’s criminal justice system, the case of Dedric Brewington is currently under review for potential parole. Brewington, convicted of first-degree murder in Cumberland County’s Superior Court, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Alongside this, he received additional sentences of 10 years each for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury (AWDWIKISI) and common law robbery. His conviction dates back to December 14, 1993.

Investigating Parole Eligibility

The N.C. Post Release Supervision and Parole Commission has commenced an investigation into Brewington’s case as part of the Mutual Agreement Parole Program (MAPP). This program is a collaborative effort involving the Commission, the N.C. Department of Adult Correction, and the offender, aimed at facilitating the parole process through educational and vocational initiatives. Further details about MAPP are available on the N.C. Department of Adult Correction website.

The Commission’s decision-making process involves a thorough examination of the case’s details and input from both supporters and opponents of Brewington’s parole. Upon completing their evaluation, the Commission will issue its decision and inform all pertinent parties within 10 days.

Legacy Sentencing Law and Parole

It is noteworthy that under North Carolina’s current Structured Sentencing law, which took effect on October 1, 1994, parole is no longer available for crimes committed thereafter. However, the Commission retains the authority to grant parole to offenders sentenced under pre-existing guidelines, such as Brewington’s case.

Due to confidentiality regulations, specific details concerning the parole investigation, including victim information and communications opposing parole, are considered privileged and not accessible to the public.

For those seeking more information on the parole proceedings, the Commission can be reached at (919) 716-3010.
