New Partnership Brings Economic Boost to Eastern North Carolina
In a significant development for eastern North Carolina, Governor Stein has revealed a new 10-year collaboration between the N.C. Global TransPark and the U.S. Navy. This agreement is poised to create over 400 jobs in the region, focusing on maintenance and overhaul services for the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE).
The North Carolina legislature approved a substantial $350 million loan earlier this year to facilitate site upgrades at the N.C. Global TransPark, ensuring it meets the operational needs of FRCE. The Navy has committed to a $15 million annual contract, commencing when FRCE takes full possession of its designated 65-acre area at the TransPark.
Governor Josh Stein expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “North Carolina’s strong defense and aviation tradition and world-class workforce make this announcement a perfect partnership. The long-term agreement will bring economic prosperity to eastern North Carolina and support our nation’s military readiness.”
Tom Hendrickson, Board Chair of N.C. Global TransPark, highlighted the significance of this moment, noting, “This agreement marks a defining moment for the Global TransPark. Years from now, we will look back and recognize this partnership with Fleet Readiness Center East as the catalyst for a new era of growth and opportunity.”
The initiative not only promises well-paying jobs but also enhances infrastructure critical for the armed forces. Jeremy Stroud, Executive Director of N.C. Global TransPark, emphasized, “Not only does this project bring high-quality jobs with wages well above the county average, but it also strengthens our ability to support the men and women of our armed forces with the critical infrastructure they need to carry out the nation’s mission.”
Andy Napoli, Assistant Commander at U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, explained the strategic importance of the agreement: “The innovative acquisition strategy the Department of the Navy executed in partnership with the State of North Carolina demonstrates how we can deliver lethal outputs – ready warfighters, platforms, and sustained readiness – at the speed and scale necessary to win our nation’s wars.”
Following a successful temporary relocation from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, FRCE found operations more effective at the N.C. Global TransPark, suggesting further potential for growth. The initial military operations are expected to commence in July, with aircraft scheduled to arrive by fall. Construction efforts are underway to complete hangar facilities by next summer, providing the Navy with 17 acres of covered space.
