Mike Causey to Address Distracted Driving Dangers at Charlotte Event

The alarming issue of distracted driving takes center stage at a significant event in Charlotte, drawing attention from both public officials and safety advocates. As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a news conference will be held to discuss the risks associated with this dangerous behavior and its impact on road safety.

The event, scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Pearl Street Park in Charlotte, will feature N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and other prominent figures in traffic safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving was responsible for 3,208 fatalities in 2024. Experts suspect that this figure might be underreported, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Common distractions include activities like eating or adjusting the radio; however, the use of cell phones significantly increases the risk of accidents, as noted by crash investigators. The prevalence of distracted driving is a key factor in the rise of auto insurance rates, alongside other issues such as speeding, impaired driving, and not wearing seatbelts.

Key Participants at the News Conference

Speakers at the event will include:

  • Mike Causey, N.C. Insurance Commissioner
  • Tasha Hairston Springs, a survivor of a distracted driving crash
  • Tiffany Wright, representing AAA-The Auto Club Group and serving as N.C. Alliance for Safe Transportation Chair
  • Sydney Martin, a teen driving ambassador
  • Trooper R.A. Rogers from the N.C. Highway Patrol
