Nighttime Closures on I-40 to Facilitate Bridge Construction for N.C. 540
Motorists traveling on Interstate 40 near U.S. 70 in Clayton should prepare for nighttime closures as construction crews work on a new bridge. These closures are part of the ongoing efforts to construct the future N.C. 540 highway.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has scheduled closures for both directions of I-40, beginning tonight and continuing through Tuesday. The closures will occur from 10 p.m. each night, reopening at 5 a.m. the following morning.
For those traveling westbound on I-40, a detour is in place directing traffic to take N.C. 42 East (Exit 312A) to U.S. 70 West, which will then reconnect with I-40 West. Eastbound travelers should exit at U.S. 70 East and follow the designated detour through the N.C. 540 turbine, leading back to N.C. 540 and then to I-40 East.
Drivers are advised to reduce their speed and exercise caution while navigating the work zone during these closure periods.
