Dr. Mariah Walker Named 2026 NC Principal of the Year by Wells Fargo

Celebrating Excellence: Mariah Walker Named 2026 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year

In a distinguished ceremony at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, Dr. Mariah Walker, principal of Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy (WYWLA), was honored as the 2026 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year. Her dedication and leadership were celebrated alongside eight other regional finalists.

North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice “Mo” Green praised Dr. Walker’s leadership, stating, “Dr. Walker is the type of leader we need in North Carolina’s public schools.” He highlighted her ability to cultivate a respectful and authentic environment that promotes growth at WYWLA.

With two decades of educational experience, Walker’s journey began at Hillburn PreK-8 Academy. Now at WYWLA, she leads young women in grades 6-13, achieving a 100% graduation rate for four consecutive years and surpassing growth expectations in recent years.

Dr. Robert Taylor, Superintendent of Wake County Public School System, lauded Walker as a “mentor, advocate, and thought leader” who fosters collaboration and supports the development of school leaders, emphasizing her influence on policy and systems supporting students and staff.

Walker played a pivotal role in transitioning WYWLA’s Early College program through several institutions, ultimately establishing it at Shaw University. She engages families in the mission to nurture future leaders beyond the academy’s walls.

Juan Austin, Wells Fargo’s senior vice president of Philanthropy and Community Impact, expressed the company’s pride in supporting educational leaders like Dr. Walker, who contribute to stronger futures for students and communities. “Our longstanding commitment to North Carolina is rooted in creating opportunity,” he stated.

Dr. Walker, a four-time NC State University graduate, holds multiple degrees including a doctorate. She serves as the president of the Wake County Division of Principals and Assistant Principals and is recognized as a lifelong learner.

Throughout the 2026-27 school year, Walker will serve as an ambassador for the profession, with support from Wells Fargo and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Her accolades include a mobile device from Lenovo, an engraved award, and participation in the Truist Leadership Institute, among others.

Reflecting on her leadership philosophy, Walker said, “My leadership is centered around this truth, ‘How you make room at your table determines whether your guest wants to eat.’” At WYWLA, she strives to confront inequity with courage and collective responsibility.
