Governor Stein Appoints New Senior Advisor for Homeland Security Amidst Senate Inaction
In a decisive move, Governor Stein has appointed Jeff Smythe as the Senior Advisor for Homeland Security. This decision comes after a prolonged delay in the Senate regarding Smythe’s previous nomination as Secretary of the Department of Public Safety. Governor Stein expressed his dissatisfaction with the Senate’s inaction, stating that it has hindered the safety efforts in North Carolina.
“Jeff Smythe is a dedicated public servant and decorated law enforcement leader who has spent his 40-year career focused on keeping people safe,” Governor Stein stated. Despite Smythe’s qualifications, the Senate has not held any public hearings or made progress on his nomination over the past seven months, which the Governor described as a failure of duty and a disregard for law enforcement and public safety.
Governor Stein emphasized the importance of having experienced individuals in leadership roles to enhance public safety. “The people of North Carolina are safer when proven and talented public servants like Jeff are empowered to lead,” he remarked. Consequently, Smythe’s nomination as Secretary is being withdrawn, and he will instead take on the role of Senior Advisor for Homeland Security.
In light of these changes, Casandra Hoekstra, the current Chief of Staff for the Department of Public Safety, has been appointed as the Interim Secretary for the NCDPS. Governor Stein assured that the search for a permanent Secretary would continue, emphasizing that political issues should not interfere with the mission to build a safer and more robust North Carolina. “Politics should never get in the way of our work to create a safer, stronger North Carolina. I certainly won’t let it,” he affirmed.
