Craven Correctional Institution has welcomed Christopher Auer as its new warden, marking a new chapter for the facility. Auer steps into this role following his previous position as associate warden of operations at the same institution.
Leadership Transition at Craven Correctional
“We were fortunate to have someone already in place to take the leadership of Craven Correctional Institution,” stated Leslie Cooley Dismukes, Secretary of Adult Correction. “Warden Auer’s 24 years of experience in the corrections field, combined with his proven ability as a leader, will benefit Craven Correctional and the NC Department of Adult Correction.”
Responsibilities and Operations
As the new warden, Auer will oversee all operations at the Vanceboro facility. This center is notable for being one of the most active processing hubs for new admissions in North Carolina’s correctional system. In the previous year, over 7,000 newly sentenced individuals were admitted through Craven Correctional, where they were assessed and assigned to long-term facilities based on their needs.
Extensive Experience in Corrections
Auer began his career in the corrections field after serving five years in the U.S. Army. His journey started in 2001 as a correctional food service officer at Hyde Correctional Institution. He subsequently became a correctional officer in 2006, moving up to the rank of sergeant by 2008, lieutenant in 2011, and captain in 2016. In 2019, he transitioned as a captain to Craven Correctional and was promoted to associate warden in 2023.
Commitment to Correctional Excellence
Throughout his career, Auer has been involved with the East Region Intelligence Team and the Correctional Sergeant’s Examination Committee. Moreover, he played a role in the Classification Committee at both facility and division levels, showcasing his dedication to excellence in the correctional field.
