Safety Measures Lead to New Traffic Pattern at Asheville Intersection
In an effort to enhance road safety, a key intersection in Asheville has been transformed into an all-way stop. This change follows collaboration between the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the City of Asheville. Their joint initiative has introduced new stop signs and updated pavement markings at the intersection of Emma Road and Bingham Road, located in north Asheville.
Previously, only drivers on Bingham Road were required to stop at this junction. The new configuration mandates that vehicles on both roads must now make a complete stop. This modification serves as a strategic, cost-effective measure to address recurring frontal-impact collisions at this site.
Implementing all-way stops across North Carolina has significantly decreased the number and severity of accidents, proving effective in saving lives and reducing property damage. Statistics reveal a 68% reduction in total crashes, a 77% decrease in injury-related incidents, and a 75% drop in frontal-impact collisions due to these installations.
Guidelines for Navigating an All-Way Stop
• The first vehicle to arrive at the intersection is given the right of way;
• If two or more vehicles reach the intersection simultaneously, the vehicle on the right has the precedence and can proceed straight or, after signaling, make a left or right turn;
• When two vehicles face each other at the intersection, both can advance straight or turn right after stopping. If one intends to go straight while the other wants to turn left, the latter must yield;
• Regardless of having the right of way, drivers should always use proper turn signals and remain vigilant for pedestrians and other vehicles.
