Washoe County authorized for geotechnical investigation in Lemmon Valley

In an effort to combat persistent flooding issues, the Bureau of Land Management’s Sierra Front Field Office has granted Washoe County the green light for geotechnical site investigations near Lemmon Valley, Nevada. This vital step will lay the groundwork for future storm-water control facilities aimed at alleviating the region’s chronic flood challenges.

The investigation site is positioned close to the intersection of Oregon Boulevard and Highway 165. The approved activities, which include the excavation of test pits and the creation of temporary overland access routes, will disturb approximately 0.352 acres. These efforts are critical for gathering subsurface information necessary for the engineering design of future flood-mitigation structures.

Importantly, this initiative is exempt from extensive National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) scrutiny under 516 DM 11.9(J)(3). This exemption applies to preliminary site assessments, geotechnical characterization, and environmental monitoring. The project will also implement several design features, such as nesting bird surveys before construction, dust control in line with local health regulations, and measures to avoid areas with noxious weed infestations.

The project is part of a broader strategy to develop robust storm-water management solutions in Lemmon Valley. It aligns with the Carson City Field Office Consolidated Resource Management Plan, established in May 2001.

Additional project details, including a map of the area, can be found on the Project Home Page.
