Trump’s Executive Order Targets Nationwide Mail-In Voting, Nevada Reacts

Trump’s Executive Order Sparks Controversy Over Mail-In Voting in Nevada

As the debate over mail-in voting intensifies, former President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order aiming to eliminate mail-in voting across the United States. This directive has drawn criticism, particularly in Nevada, where mail-in voting is widely practiced. Despite having voted by mail four times in the past five years, Nevada’s Governor, Joe Lombardo, has expressed support for Trump’s initiative, stating, “I would — of course — support President Trump’s efforts” to terminate mail-in voting.

The potential impact on Nevada’s voting system is significant. In the 2024 election, approximately 670,000 Nevadans cast their votes via mail, including many Republicans and Independents, alongside Governor Lombardo himself. Despite the popularity of mail-in voting among Nevada residents, the push from Trump and Lombardo could make it more challenging for voters to participate in elections.

Governor Lombardo has also aligned with Trump’s claims questioning the integrity of Nevada’s elections. However, these claims lack evidence, and Nevada’s election system continues to be secure. While Republicans have faced setbacks in their legal attempts to challenge mail-in voting, Democrats remain committed to expanding voting access, advocating for measures like early voting and same-day voter registration.

Nevada State Democratic Party’s Response

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Kate Sosland commented on the situation, saying, “Donald Trump knows his cost-raising agenda that Joe Lombardo has championed is deeply unpopular in Nevada, and that’s why he wants to make it harder for them to exercise their right to vote. Although Lombardo voted by mail four times, he continues to stand by Trump’s side and support his efforts to suppress Nevadans’ voices.”
