Trump-Backed Candidate Flippo Admits to Exaggerating Bronze Star Valor

In recent political developments, David Flippo, a Trump-endorsed candidate for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, has been caught in a controversy over his military accolades. Flippo has been accused of falsely claiming he was awarded the Bronze Star “for valor,” a distinction meant for acts of heroism in combat. This revelation has raised questions about his integrity and campaign strategies.

Military Community Reacts

Veterans and military experts have voiced their concerns about Flippo’s exaggeration. One expert remarked, “It’s pretty sad that this is a multiple-time thing…It shows a pattern of deception. It is someone trying to give an impression of their service that is not true.” Another comment criticized Flippo for missing the “training on officership and integrity” by promoting himself with false claims.

Jason Dempsey, a retired Army officer and fellow at the Center for a New American Security, labeled the exaggeration as “pretty blatant” and indicative of Flippo “grasping for unearned valor.”

Campaign Missteps

Flippo’s claims of receiving a Bronze Star with valor have appeared in various campaign materials since he began his political journey. Although he indeed received a Bronze Star in 2004, it was not the rare valor version awarded for direct combat heroism. His campaign attributed these inaccuracies to “honest mistakes” by staff, despite the repeated nature of the claims.

Flippo’s campaign, amidst these revelations, has attempted to downplay the situation. Rory McShane, Flippo’s spokesperson, commented on the error, saying, “A copywriter accidentally using old talking points does not a scandal make.”

Expert Opinions on Military Awards

Doug Sterner, a respected expert on military honors, emphasized the significance of Flippo’s misrepresentation, stating, “It amounts to a lie. It’s a falsification, a misrepresentation of the award that he received. He did not get an award for heroism.” The Air Force Personnel Center echoes the rarity of the valor device, reserved for acts of heroism under enemy engagement.

Political Implications

The race for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, historically a Republican stronghold, has gained attention due to this controversy. The district has consistently supported Republican candidates, with Donald Trump winning by 14 percentage points in the 2024 election. However, with Democrats looking to capitalize on the current political climate, Teresa Benitez-Thompson, the Democratic nominee, poses a formidable challenge.

Former Representative Mark Amodei has refrained from endorsing Flippo, stating that the candidate is “not my cup of tea” and expressing no intention to support him. Amodei’s reluctance highlights the divide within the Republican party regarding Flippo’s candidacy.
