In the race for Nevada’s Lieutenant Governor, Democratic nominee Sandra Jauregui is advancing a robust public safety initiative aimed at preventing firearms from reaching criminals, domestic abusers, and terrorists, all while upholding the lawful rights of Nevada citizens. Her plan emerges in stark contrast to her opponent’s stance, aligning with comprehensive measures she has previously championed in her political career.

Having survived the tragic Route 91 mass shooting, Jauregui has been a pivotal figure in Nevada’s legislative efforts to bolster gun safety. Her legislative successes include the prohibition of bump stocks and the introduction of stringent regulations to restrict firearm access among dangerous individuals. As her opponent, Stavros Anthony, supports efforts to undo public safety measures, Jauregui’s latest proposal seeks to enhance community protection across the state.

Key Components of the Safety Plan

• Establishment of the Preventing Abuse, Crime, and Terrorism (PACT) Office: This office will collaborate with law enforcement to enforce existing laws and educate the public, aiming to curtail firearm access to criminals, domestic abusers, and terrorists.
• Introduction of state firearm dealer licensing and accountability standards: This includes implementing commonsense safety and compliance requirements for gun dealers, with a focus on revoking licenses from persistent violators.
• Adoption of responsible state procurement practices: Ensures Nevada’s taxpayer funds are allocated to firearm dealers with exemplary compliance records.

The Nevadan: Sandra Jauregui’s plan to close Nevada’s gun loophole

Background and Legislative Efforts

Jauregui’s entry into legislative reform was catalyzed by her personal experience in the 2017 mass shooting, which claimed 58 lives and injured over 800 individuals. As a result, she has become a staunch advocate for gun safety reforms, focusing on legislative measures to mitigate gun violence in Nevada.

While her opponent faces ethical controversies, Jauregui maintains a clear focus on advancing her public safety agenda. Her recent proposal, unveiled on July 18, outlines her continued commitment to addressing gun violence.

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, also a survivor and gun violence advocate, joined Jauregui in launching this initiative. Giffords praised Jauregui’s efforts, stating, “As a survivor of the devastating 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting, Majority Leader Jauregui knows exactly how urgent this issue is to Nevadans.”

Pillars of the Initiative

The plan’s first pillar involves establishing the PACT Office to enhance public education on gun safety and collaborate with law enforcement. Although Jauregui has yet to consult law enforcement about this initiative, her prior legislative work has been in conjunction with their efforts.

Following the Route 91 incident, Jauregui sponsored the “1 October Bill,” which introduced a red flag law in Nevada. This allows courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed threats to themselves or others, a measure she hopes to expand through the PACT Office.

Jauregui’s second focus is on reforming firearm dealer licensing, proposing background checks and age requirements for employees, and ensuring products are secured after hours. She advocates for a licensing framework similar to that of marijuana dispensaries.

The third component addresses state expenditure, ensuring public funds are used to procure firearms and equipment from compliant dealers.

Jauregui emphasized bipartisan cooperation, declaring, “I will work with anyone, Democrat, Republican or Independent, with the same mission: creating a Nevada where people feel safe and free to go to concerts, or church or their school without the fear of being gunned down. We can protect both the second amendment and second graders.”
