Reno to Begin Riverside Drive Berm Project for Flood Protection

Reno Embarks on Riverside Drive Berm Project to Enhance Flood Protection

Starting Monday, January 26, the City of Reno will commence the Riverside Drive Berm Project, a significant effort aimed at bolstering flood defenses along the north bank of the Truckee River. This initiative focuses on increasing the berm and sidewalk’s height and stability between Booth Street and Lundsford Park to achieve the mandated flood-capacity standard of 14,000 cubic feet per second.

In addition to raising the berm, the project includes replacing the current five-foot sidewalk with a new 10-foot accessible pathway. Riprap installation is also planned to safeguard the riverbank against erosion. This marks the beginning of a series of flood-protection improvements slated for the Truckee River area.

Construction is projected to wrap up by spring 2026, with assurances that all trees in the vicinity will remain untouched during the process. To ensure safety, the south-side walking path along Riverside Drive will be closed for about three months, stretching from Booth Street to Ralston Street. Pedestrians will be rerouted to the north side during this period, and there will be occasional traffic control measures implemented throughout the construction phase.

The construction project, costing $1,398,933, is financed by the Truckee River Flood Management Authority (TRFMA) via an Interlocal Funding Agreement sanctioned by the Reno City Council in July 2025. The Carson-Truckee Water Conservancy District (CTWCD) is providing funding for the design phase. Oversight of the construction will fall under the City of Reno’s purview.
