Reno Police Chief, Officers on Leave Pending Investigation

Reno Police Department Under Investigation as Key Members Placed on Leave

In an unexpected development, the Reno Police Chief along with five members of the department have been placed on administrative leave. This decision comes as part of an ongoing independent investigation into potential breaches of City policy.

The City of Reno sought the expertise of the Nevada Department of Public Safety to ensure the investigation is conducted impartially and without bias. This step underscores the city’s commitment to transparency and fairness in addressing the allegations.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve emphasized the importance of community trust, stating, “Public safety and maintaining the trust of our community are our highest priorities. When concerns are raised involving leadership in the Reno Police Department, it is our responsibility to address them thoughtfully and transparently while ensuring the safety of our residents.”

It is crucial to note that placing employees on administrative leave during such investigations does not imply any wrongdoing. The individuals involved are afforded due process as outlined by law, collective bargaining agreements, and City policies.

To maintain stability within the department, Reno has enacted an Interlocal Agreement with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. According to Reno City Manager Jackie Bryant, “During this period, the City will retain executive oversight, and the Reno Police Department will continue to operate under its currently established policies and procedures.”

Residents can rest assured that the police services in Reno will remain uninterrupted during this period.
