Reno Fire Dept. Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Safety for Fire Prevention Week

Reno Fire Department Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Safety During Fire Prevention Week

As National Fire Prevention Week approaches, the Reno Fire Department (RFD) collaborates with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to highlight the potential risks posed by lithium-ion batteries. This year, the awareness week, running from October 5–11, emphasizes educating the public on how to safely handle and store these batteries to prevent fires.

Lithium-ion batteries, found in many everyday devices like smartphones, laptops, and electric cars, can be hazardous if not used correctly. The RFD warns that improper use or disposal can lead to overheating, fires, or even explosions. As fire incidents related to these batteries rise, the department aims to inform residents about best practices to reduce such risks.

RFD officials stress the importance of following manufacturers’ guidelines for charging and storing lithium-ion batteries. “Always use the charger that came with your device,” advises the NFPA. They also recommend keeping batteries at room temperature and away from flammable materials.

To further assist the community, the RFD offers demonstrations and educational programs throughout the week. These initiatives are designed to provide practical knowledge and equip residents with the skills needed to manage lithium-ion battery safety effectively.
