Trump’s Budget Proposal Threatens Energy Assistance for Thousands in Nevada
Nevada residents are preparing for another sweltering summer, yet the proposed budget from Donald Trump aims to cut the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a crucial support system for families and seniors struggling with energy expenses. In 2024 alone, LIHEAP assisted over 17,000 households in Nevada, providing significant savings on heating and cooling costs, with families saving close to $1000 on average.
During Trump’s administration, Nevada’s residents faced some of the highest energy bills nationwide. Additionally, over 80,500 clean energy jobs were either lost or put on hold across the country. A $156 million grant that could have lowered utility expenses for many low-income Nevada residents was also terminated by the Trump administration.
While utility bills soar, Nevada’s Governor Joe Lombardo has publicly endorsed Trump and consistently commends him, even calling his performance “a fantastic job,” despite the increase in gas prices linked to Trump’s policies, as seen through AAA reports.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Kate Sosland’s Statement:
“Donald Trump’s budget guts a program that helps working families and seniors afford their energy bills and cool their homes during deadly extreme heat — and Joe Lombardo still refuses to defend Nevadans. These LIHEAP cuts are life-threatening in Nevada’s record-breaking temperatures, yet Lombardo still doesn’t have the backbone to stand up for working families when it matters most.”
