Grants Available for Nevada Wildfire Risk Reduction Efforts
RENO, Nev. — In a bid to safeguard Nevada communities from wildfires, the Nevada Fire Chiefs Association (NFCA) has teamed up with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada for a second year. The Wildfire Risk Reduction Program (WRRP) offers grants up to $75,000 to support projects aimed at reducing wildfire threats. Applications are open until March 1, 2026.
An informational webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 1 p.m. to guide eligible Nevada groups through the application process. Details and a recording of the webinar can be accessed on the WRRP application webpage.
This initiative will allocate roughly $847,665 to fund hazardous fuels reduction projects in Nevada’s wildland urban interface areas—regions where residential development meets undeveloped land. The grants will aid in activities like clearing overgrown vegetation to decrease wildfire severity and protect vital infrastructure and public safety.
Kelsey Griffee, BLM Nevada Deputy State Fire Management Officer, emphasized the importance of cross-boundary collaboration, stating, “Addressing wildfire threats across jurisdictional boundaries is critical to protecting Nevada communities, private property, the environment, and public lands.” She affirmed BLM Nevada’s commitment to working with statewide partners to mitigate wildfire risks.
The WRRP is financed through BLM Nevada’s Community Assistance Program, which is a $1.6 million investment in fuels reduction over the 2026–2027 period.
NFCA President and City of Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran noted, “This partnership with BLM Nevada strengthens our efforts to reduce wildfire risk statewide. These projects will improve safety for residents and firefighters, protect property and infrastructure, increase public awareness, and reduce fire spread between private and public lands.”

Before and after images depict vegetation removal near homes in Lincoln County during the Caselton & Pioche Fire Mitigation Project in 2025. Implemented by the Lincoln County Fire Protection District and funded by the Wildfire Risk Reduction Program, the project established fuel breaks using mastication and chipping across 18 acres, reducing wildfire risk for over 900 residents and multiple homes in two communities.
