Nevada GOP Silent on Birthright Citizenship Amid Trump’s Push for Change

Nevada’s Political Silence on Birthright Citizenship Sparks Debate

As the debate over birthright citizenship continues to intensify, Nevada’s political leaders remain largely silent. This comes in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s attempts to challenge this constitutional right, despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down his executive order aimed at restricting it.

Recent reports indicate that Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, a prominent figure in the state’s Republican Party, is aligning himself with more extreme elements of his party who oppose birthright citizenship. This is happening even as Trump seeks to have the Supreme Court reverse its decision, with Lombardo not voicing any opposition. Nevada Current highlights the silence of Republican candidates on this issue.

The state’s Republican platform explicitly opposes the right to citizenship for children born to immigrants, a stance that contradicts the demographic reality of Nevada. With one in five residents being immigrants and around 320,000 children having at least one immigrant parent, the platform stands at odds with a significant portion of the state’s population.

Nevada Republican Candidates’ Silence

  • Governor Joe Lombardo, along with several Nevada Republican candidates, have chosen not to clarify their position on Trump’s legislative push to restrict birthright citizenship.
  • The Supreme Court’s recent decision against Trump’s executive order has not deterred him from urging Congress to legislate against the right, although Congressional Republicans are divided on the issue.
  • The Nevada Republican Party’s opposition to birthright citizenship remains unchanged, as they failed to update their platform at the state convention in May 2026.
  • Lombardo has consistently refrained from commenting on the issue, even after Trump’s executive order during his second term.
  • Nevada Attorney General Ford criticized Lombardo’s inaction, stating, “Nevadans deserve better than Lombardo’s subservience to Donald Trump – we need leaders who are unafraid to stand up for the rule of law and our most fundamental rights.” Ford was part of a lawsuit challenging Trump’s order.
  • Ford further commented, “Joe Lombardo’s failure to support birthright citizenship, the established law of our land, is yet more proof that he’s not fit to be our Governor.”
  • A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in late June revealed that 58% of Americans are against ending birthright citizenship, including a majority of independents and Democrats, and 38% of Republicans.
