Lombardo’s 2025 Campaign Funded by Real Estate, Housing Costs Soar

In a political landscape where financial backing often influences legislative actions, Governor Joe Lombardo’s ties with significant real estate figures have sparked a notable discussion. His reelection campaign has drawn substantial contributions from real estate mogul Robert Bigelow and other corporate interests, following Lombardo’s veto of bills aimed at reducing housing costs and safeguarding renters from corporate housing practices.

Robert Bigelow, widely recognized for controversial actions such as evicting low-income tenants during the pandemic, has been a significant financial supporter of Lombardo. This support continued as Bigelow donated $220,000 through 22 companies linked to a single address, marking his first political contributions since 2022. This donation came precisely as legal restrictions on donations were lifted following a legislative session.

Governor Lombardo’s association with Bigelow was evident when he invited him as a special guest at the 2025 State of the State address, amidst rising foreclosure and eviction rates in Nevada. Overall, real estate interests have contributed approximately $1.6 million to Lombardo’s campaign, underscoring the influence of wealth and corporate interests in political campaigns.

Nevada’s Housing Crisis

The financial backing from the real estate sector has coincided with increasing concerns about housing affordability in Nevada. A recent survey indicated that a significant majority of Nevadans find housing costs prohibitive, with many considering relocation due to these financial pressures. The surge in housing costs has left most Las Vegas homes out of reach for typical buyers.

Despite these issues, Lombardo has faced criticism for vetoing bills that aimed to cap rent increases for seniors and reform eviction processes. He reportedly discouraged legislators from passing a bill to limit corporate homebuying, a stance that has drawn ire from state Democrats.

Nevada Independent

According to the Nevada Independent, Lombardo’s fundraising heavily relies on donors using legal loopholes to extend their financial support.

  • The leading contributors to Lombardo’s campaign include well-known Nevada donors like Bigelow and Walters.
  • Bigelow’s sizable contributions have positioned him as a top donor since Lombardo’s 2022 gubernatorial campaign.
  • Real estate and development sector donors, including major construction and commercial real estate groups, contributed significantly, totaling around $1.6 million.

  • Lombardo’s vetoes, such as those rejecting rent control for seniors, have sparked significant backlash.
  • He has also been criticized for opposing changes to the state’s eviction process, favoring landlords over tenants in legal proceedings.
