Bureau of Land Management Seeks Public Input on Nevada Mine Expansion

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is inviting public comments on a significant proposal that could reshape the landscape of Eureka County, Nevada. With a 30-day window now open, the community has the opportunity to weigh in on Nevada Gold Mines LLC’s plans to expand operations at the Cortez Mine.

The proposed project by Nevada Gold Mines LLC includes several key modifications to the existing mining operations. The company aims to enlarge the Cortez Pit and establish new waste rock facilities named East and West Airport. Concurrently, they plan to reduce the size of the previously approved Cortez Waste Rock facility. Additional modifications will involve altering support infrastructure for the Cortez Pit, such as haul roads, and dewatering and monitoring wells.

The scale of the proposed expansion is substantial, with expectations to produce up to 4 million tons of ore and 132 million tons of waste rock. These changes are poised to impact both the physical environment and local communities, emphasizing the importance of public feedback during this comment period.
