BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. – Efforts to mitigate wildfire risks in Nevada are underway as the Bureau of Land Management’s Battle Mountain District initiates prescribed burns. These controlled fires, conducted during safe daylight conditions, are scheduled around the Roberts Mountain Range, located 15 miles northwest of Eureka, and the Shoshone Mountain Range, 35 miles north of Austin. The operations will continue until March 1, 2026.
Robert Burdick, the Fuels Manager at Battle Mountain, emphasized the importance of these burns, stating, “Prescribed burns are an effective way for us to reduce the natural fuels that could cause wildfires and that threaten rangelands, forests and the wildland urban interface.”
Residents near the BLM worksites might observe wildland firefighters managing fire activities, which involves igniting specific areas and controlling any resulting embers. During these operations, motorists will be alerted by signs posted along Highway 278, Highway 50, and Highway 305. Smoke from the burns may be visible from a distance, persisting until the operations are completed.
