Wild Horse Gather Concludes in Caliente, Nevada, With 350 Horses Removed
CALIENTE, Nev. – On May 28, 2026, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) successfully completed the Caliente Complex wild horse gather for fiscal year 2026 near Caliente, Nevada. A total of 350 surplus wild horses were removed from public lands using the water and bait trap method.
The primary goal of this operation was to prevent further environmental degradation on public lands due to overpopulation of wild horses. The gather aimed to restore a balanced ecosystem and maintain a multiple-use relationship on these lands. This action was deemed necessary because of inadequate water resources, insufficient forage, and declining health of the wild horses.
Conducted in accordance with Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, the gather supports the progress toward meeting the Rangeland Health Standards identified by the Mohave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council.
The BLM has transported the gathered horses to the Indian Lakes Wild Horse and Burro Off-range Corrals in Fallon, Nevada. Here, they will be prepared for the BLM’s wild horse and burro Adoption and Sales Program. Horses that are not adopted or sold will live in long-term pastures, where they will continue to be cared for humanely and retain their “wild” status as protected by the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
