Join Little Explorers’ S.T.E.A.M. Night: Host an Interactive Station!

Exploring S.T.E.A.M. Concepts Through the Eyes of Young Children

Imagine the world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (S.T.E.A.M.) through the playful curiosity of a two-year-old. A child drops a ball down a ramp repeatedly to observe its motion, discovering fundamental physics principles through simple play.

For children, S.T.E.A.M. exploration takes shape in everyday activities: pushing buttons to see what happens, constructing towers and rebuilding them, or sorting colorful objects. This November, an event designed to foster these explorations is set to take place in Livingston County.

Little Explorers’ S.T.E.A.M. Night

📅 Thursday, November 12, 2026
🕔 5:00–7:00 p.m.
📍 Livingston Educational Service Agency
1425 W. Grand River Ave.

This event targets families with children aged 0–5, encouraging hands-on learning through play and discovery.

Invitation for Community Involvement

Local entities such as schools, libraries, and businesses are invited to host interactive stations that cater to the young audience. The aim is to engage children in activities where they can touch, build, and explore alongside their guardians.

HOST A S.T.E.A.M. STATION

Envisioning a S.T.E.A.M. Station

Participants don’t need to be experts to create impactful experiences. S.T.E.A.M. stations can be as simple as engaging children in play, where they can experiment and learn through interaction.

🔬 Science — Engaging with nature, experimenting with light, water, and motion.

💻 Technology — Learning through simple machines and electronic interactions.

🏗️ Engineering — Creating structures and understanding design concepts.

🎨 Art — Exploring colors, textures, and creative expression.

🔢 Math — Sorting, counting, and understanding patterns and shapes.

Activities are often multidisciplinary, allowing children to explore multiple S.T.E.A.M. fields simultaneously.

Prioritizing Active Engagement

The focus is on providing children with opportunities to actively engage with their environment, encouraging them to explore and learn through interaction rather than observation alone.

Effective activities should allow children to:

  • Engage in repetitive exploration
  • Make choices and observe outcomes
  • Build and create using simple materials
  • Predict and test hypotheses
  • Utilize their senses in exploration
  • Problem-solve in a supportive environment

If a child can manipulate, alter, or explore it, the activity is likely well-suited for the event.

Families will navigate the event at their own pace, engaging with various stations designed for easy access and immediate participation.

The Educational Impact of S.T.E.A.M. Play

Through hands-on S.T.E.A.M. activities, children develop crucial skills such as:

💬 Communication — Enhancing vocabulary and verbal interaction.

🏃 Gross Motor — Improving physical coordination and spatial awareness.

✋ Fine Motor — Developing dexterity through manipulation of objects.

💡 Problem Solving — Encouraging critical thinking and resilience.

❤️ Personal-Social — Fostering social skills and cooperation.

Activities should be simple yet engaging, fostering a rich learning environment.

Partnering for a Successful Event

Community collaboration is essential for the success of Little Explorers’ S.T.E.A.M. Night, with local organizations contributing through creative activities and enthusiastic participation.

No need for elaborate setups. A simple, engaging activity and a friendly approach can create a significant impact for participating families.

Expectations for Station Hosts

Organizations are expected to provide:

  • An engaging, hands-on activity suitable for young children
  • All necessary materials for the activity
  • Personnel to engage with children and families
  • Setup and cleanup of their station

Station hosts should arrive by 4:15 p.m. for setup and engage with participants until the event concludes at 7:00 p.m.

Fostering Community Connection

While branding is allowed, the emphasis remains on interaction rather than promotion, creating an organic opportunity for families to connect with local organizations during the event.
