The City of Flint is taking proactive measures as it braces for a surge in temperatures next week by opening four cooling centers. These centers are set to offer residents a refuge from the anticipated heatwave, providing air-conditioned spaces to ensure community safety.
With the National Weather Service predicting heat index levels between 100 and 108 degrees, the cooling centers will operate from Monday through Wednesday, with the possibility of extending to Thursday should the extreme temperatures persist.
Cooling Center Locations and Operating Hours
- Haskell Community Center, 2201 Clifford St. (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Mays Senior & Community Center, 1002 W. Home Ave. (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
- McKinley Community Center, 249 Peer Ave. (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
- The Dome at Flint City Hall, 1101 S. Saginaw St. (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
The Dome at Flint City Hall will offer a unique feature by screening family-friendly movies throughout the day, adding an element of entertainment for those seeking refuge from the heat.
Mayor Sheldon Neeley emphasized the importance of community safety, stating, “Protecting the health and well-being of our residents is always our highest priority. When temperatures reach dangerous levels, we want every Flint resident to know there is a safe place to cool down. I encourage anyone who needs relief from the heat to take advantage of these cooling centers. This is what community is about—looking out for one another.”
Residents are advised to keep hydrated, minimize outdoor activities during peak heat hours, wear lightweight clothing, and check on vulnerable individuals such as elderly neighbors and relatives.
The City will keep a close watch on the weather and will provide updates regarding any changes to the cooling center operations or the availability of additional resources.
