Flint initiates fall hydrant flushing to prepare water system for winter

Flint, Michigan – As part of its seasonal maintenance efforts, the City of Flint’s Water Service Center is set to initiate a comprehensive fire hydrant flushing campaign. This initiative is crucial for the winterization of the city’s water infrastructure.

During the hydrant flushing process, the Water Department aims to accomplish two primary objectives:

  • Eliminating the natural mineral deposits that build up in water lines over time.
  • Reducing water levels in hydrants to prevent them from freezing during the colder months.

This maintenance routine is essential for improving water circulation throughout the city’s system. The flushing activities will be ongoing throughout the fall across various city regions, ensuring no disruption to the water services for residents and local businesses.

Residents might notice the release of brown or discolored water from hydrants, which is a typical part of the flushing process to cleanse and sustain the water network. The crews will commence this procedure near the Water Plant, gradually extending their efforts to other city areas. For any inquiries or issues, residents are encouraged to reach out to the Water Department at 810-766-7280.
