In a bid to honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a community event is being organized in West Des Moines, bringing together diverse organizations and residents in celebration of his life and message. This gathering aims to reflect on the shared commitment to justice and human rights.
The MLK Day celebration, open to all and free of charge, will take place at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex, located at 6500 Grand Avenue, on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Attendees can look forward to an engaging evening with a keynote speech by Dr. Vicky Long Hill, an esteemed lawyer and community leader. Dr. Hill, a prominent figure in West Des Moines, was recently honored with the Community Leadership Award at last year’s MLK Day Celebration.
In addition to the keynote address, the event will feature musical performances, food, educational exhibits, and the presentation of scholarships and community awards. Residents and families are encouraged to attend and reflect on the importance of community service and human rights. Register to attend the MLK Day celebration.
West Des Moines Youth, Community & Business Leadership Awards
Each year, the City of West Des Moines Human Rights Commission, alongside the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and the WDM MLK Day Planning Committee, acknowledges individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to promoting peace, respect, and cooperation in the community. The awards include three Youth Scholarships, one Community Leadership Award, and one Business Leadership Award. Apply for an award or make a nomination.

Participants may register for morning and afternoon shifts on the Meals from the Heartland website.
