Lois and her daughter Holly Collins, a senior at West Springfield High School, were eager to experience the University of Virginia’s renowned campus. They arrived early on a sunny spring morning for the University’s “Days on the Lawn” event, a series of sessions aimed at helping prospective students decide if UVA is the right choice for them.
Holly is keenly interested in UVA for its beautiful surroundings and strong academic programs, particularly in accounting. “Hopefully, I get into the Commerce School,” she expressed with enthusiasm. “I just really connected with it the first time I came, and I was determined to come here.”
Despite returning to campus, Holly’s decision seems firm. “It just means I wanted the opportunity to just come back and see it again,” she clarified. Her mother, Lois, added, “We came to Days on the Lawn because it’s an experience and we wanted to kind of enjoy the hype, if you will, the excitement.”
The event kicked off with the Cavalier Marching Band energizing the attendees as they performed “Rock & Roll, Part II,” more commonly known as the “Hey Song,” with spirited chants of “UVA! Go Hoos Go!”
Exploration
Another prospective student, Trevor Tiberio from Fredericksburg, echoed the sentiment of excitement. Already enrolled, he said, “I’m just really excited to be on the Lawn, and I really wanted to come and explore. I love exploring.”
In her welcome remarks, Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Nichole Hall emphasized the theme of exploration. “I tend to think of your time here as a great adventure,” she stated. “Literally, there won’t be any two individuals who will have the same adventure here at UVA.”
Hall highlighted not only the academic strengths of the University but also its unique location near the Blue Ridge Mountains and historic sites in Central Virginia. “I hope that you can now, even more so, understand not only how you can enrich this place, but how this place will be able to enrich you,” she added.
For those still considering UVA, three more “Days on the Lawn” events are scheduled for April 13, 18, and 20, with availability for the April 20 session.
Looking back and ahead
Before the event began, the scene was set with fourth-year students capturing graduation memories in their caps and gowns on the Rotunda’s portico, as the sun illuminated the east side of the iconic building.
