UVA President Beardsley Outlines Strategic Vision and Planning Efforts

University of Virginia’s Strategic Vision: A Comprehensive Approach to Future Growth

The University of Virginia is embarking on a strategic journey under the leadership of its 10th president, Scott Beardsley. With a focus on integrating academic and health enterprises, Beardsley outlined his vision for the university’s future during a meeting with the Board of Visitors.

Since assuming office in January, President Beardsley has prioritized engaging with the university community through a series of stakeholder conversations. He aims to build on these insights by forming a Strategic Planning Committee, which will include a diverse representation from across the university. This committee will guide the development of a new strategic plan.

Beardsley’s approach draws from his extensive experience and recent “listening and learning tour,” where he engaged with faculty, staff, alumni, students, and stakeholders. He emphasized, “My observations are inspired by a tapestry of voices: our leadership team, board members, my own decade as a dean on these Grounds, and the hundreds of stakeholders who have shared their views during my ‘Grounds for Conversation’ listening tour.”

Central to Beardsley’s strategy are the university’s two main engines: the academic entities and the health system, a substantial $7.1 billion enterprise. These are powered by three key drivers: world-class asset management, UVA’s global reputation, and the university community.

Regarding asset management, Beardsley highlighted UVA’s robust financial standing, including a $15.5 billion endowment and a AAA credit rating. Such financial health supports UVA’s status as a premier academic institution.

Enhancing UVA’s global standing is another focal point for the committee. “We will explore how we can strengthen our global brand and reputation, so that UVA is recognized and trusted across the world,” Beardsley stated.

The strategic plan will also address the university’s role in public service. Beardsley remarked, “We are an economic anchor, an engine of opportunity and public trust, a convener of democratic dialogue and a flagship for all of higher education.”

As the university builds on its existing “2030 Plan,” several pressing issues have emerged since its inception, including the rise of artificial intelligence and shifts in collegiate sports. Beardsley noted, “The reality is that we are operating in a completely different world than we did in 2018 when our current 2030 strategic plan was written.”

Particular attention will be given to AI, with Beardsley stating, “AI is redrawing the landscape, and this area is an incredible opportunity for UVA to lead.” The university will also focus on supporting its student-athletes, emphasizing competitive performance while maintaining fiscal health.

UVA Health, a $4.4 billion health system, is another priority. The plan includes maintaining top-tier patient care, optimizing the health system’s reach, and expanding capacity at the UVA Health University Medical Center.

Collaboration across UVA’s schools will be bolstered through the “Connected Grounds” initiative, fostering cross-disciplinary research and partnerships. Beardsley explained, “The mandate now is to connect our physical Grounds in Charlottesville, our virtual Grounds and our human community.”

The strategic planning process is set to begin with the committee’s formation later this summer, aiming for a comprehensive plan by summer 2027. Beardsley concluded his presentation by inviting board members to discuss priorities, highlighting AI, athletics, research, affordability, and graduate preparedness as critical areas moving forward.
