UVA Alumni Turn AI Entrepreneurs with Tallee, Backed by Top Investors

In the bustling city of Los Angeles, two former college roommates, Jordon Durst and Bryan Pollard, found their professional paths diverging sharply after graduation. While Durst donned a suit to navigate the early hours at Goldman Sachs, Pollard immersed himself in coding at a major entertainment firm. Despite their different beginnings, a shared vision eventually brought them together to create a pioneering company.

Durst and Pollard are now the cofounders of Tallee, an innovative AI visibility tool designed to assist major brands in enhancing their presence within AI platforms like ChatGPT. This promising venture has attracted high-profile clients such as Lowe’s Home Improvement, Celsius, and Calm.

Tallee’s growth is significantly supported by Village Global, a renowned venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, with backing from industry giants like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos. Additional investment comes from Andreessen Horowitz’s Scout Fund, the UVA alumni group Cav Angels, and NBA athletes Ty Jerome and Anthony Gill, both distinguished alumni of the University of Virginia.

Origins of a Partnership

Durst and Pollard’s friendship began during their undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia. Their first meeting was during a car ride to a Bible study, a serendipitous event that laid the foundation for their enduring friendship. Despite initially taking different academic paths, their destinies intersected once more in the professional world.

Durst explored various majors before settling into the McIntire School of Commerce, followed by a pivotal internship at Goldman Sachs. He later turned down a full-time offer to pursue studies abroad. Reflecting on this decision, Durst stated, “I would do it a million times over. Studying abroad was the most formative experience of my life.”

Conversely, Pollard pursued sociology, believing it would provide a deeper understanding of people, which he later found to be true. His early career included an internship at ICM Partners, working on projects with celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee. His post-graduation journey led him to Los Angeles, where his career continued to flourish.

The Creation of Tallee

Pollard’s foray into AI began with the launch of ChatGPT in 2022. He created AskAlex, an AI concierge service capable of booking restaurant reservations based on user preferences. To promote the app, Pollard offered incentives at local bars, resulting in 3,500 downloads in just a few nights. “That’s when I knew I had something,” he remarked.

Despite the initial success, Pollard realized the need for a business partner and persistently pursued Durst to join him. After a year of persuasion, Durst agreed, and together they transformed AskAlex into a thriving service. However, recognizing the challenges within the restaurant industry, they shifted their focus to a larger opportunity.

The duo identified a gap in how brands appear on AI platforms, leading to the creation of Tallee. This B2B platform offers brands insights and actionable steps to improve their visibility and presence in the evolving digital landscape.
