The University of Iowa is taking significant steps to enhance its athletic facilities, aiming to improve both the student-athlete experience and fan engagement. Two major projects are on the agenda: the construction of a new field hockey operations building and a series of renovations to the iconic Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Field Hockey Operations Building
The University of Iowa seeks approval from the Iowa Board of Regents to proceed with constructing a dedicated field hockey operations building near Grant Field. This $8.65 million project will be fully funded by donor contributions and is slated to begin construction this summer, with an expected completion date in summer 2027.
Head coach Lisa Cellucci states, “This operations building will be truly transformational for Iowa field hockey and the future of our program. It represents far more than just a facility; it is an investment in our student-athletes, our championship culture, and the continued pursuit of excellence that has defined Iowa field hockey for five decades on the national stage.”
The new facility aims to centralize team activities, featuring home and visitor locker rooms, coaches’ offices, a film room, and a multi-purpose space. Additional elements include an athletic training room, lobby, mudroom, and storage areas. Energy efficiency is a core design principle, with features like daylight-integrated lighting and occupancy sensors to minimize energy consumption.
With 211 Big Ten conference wins and 30 NCAA Tournament victories, Iowa’s field hockey program is a powerhouse. The team will continue to practice and compete at Grant Field during construction, ensuring uninterrupted training and competition schedules.
Lisa Cellucci adds, “This building will stand as a tribute to [the] legacy and ensures that future Hawkeyes will continue to build on the championship standard they created.”
Beth Goetz, the Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair, emphasizes the importance of this project: “By bringing training, competition, and team spaces together in one location, we are creating an environment that supports excellence, fosters team culture, and positions our program for sustained success in the Big Ten and beyond.”
Carver-Hawkeye Arena Renovation
Carver-Hawkeye Arena, a staple of Iowa’s athletic scene since 1983, is set for a significant modernization. This venue has hosted a range of sports and events, including basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics, alongside community gatherings and commencement ceremonies.
The proposed renovation project, expected to cost between $50 million and $70 million, will be funded through private donations. The upgrades will occur in phases to avoid disrupting the athletic calendar and major events.
Planned enhancements include new premium seating options, club space, and improvements to concourses, concessions, restrooms, and seating areas. The focus will be on accessibility, fan comfort, and maintaining the dynamic atmosphere that Hawkeye fans cherish.
“This initiative began with a feasibility study in 2023, and due to the incredible success of our silent leadership fundraising campaign, we are prepared to take this exciting next step,” says Goetz. “Recent improvements like the student section risers and new court have shown what’s possible. Additional renovations will make events more exciting, more comfortable, and ensure we preserve an atmosphere that helps our teams compete at the highest level.”
While the seating capacity might slightly decrease from its current 14,995, the aim is to offer a broader array of seating and premium experiences to meet modern expectations.
