University of Arizona Secures Tommy Lloyd with Long-Term Contract Extension
The University of Arizona has fortified its commitment to excellence in collegiate basketball by extending the contract of men’s basketball head coach Tommy Lloyd through the 2031 season. This announcement was made by R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics, Desireé Reed-Francois, with the extension awaiting approval from the Arizona Board of Regents.
Reed-Francois praised Lloyd’s leadership, stating, “Tommy Lloyd is the best coach in college basketball, and we have a strong conviction in the future of Arizona Basketball under his leadership.” She highlighted the team’s recent successes, which include winning championships, competing on a national stage, and achieving academic excellence. Reed-Francois attributed these accomplishments to Lloyd’s recruitment and development of student-athletes who positively impact the team, the university, and the broader community.
Since taking the helm, Lloyd has achieved a remarkable 148-35 record over five seasons, securing more victories than any other NCAA coach in their first five years. Notably, during the 2025-26 season, Lloyd led Arizona to a 36–2 record, securing both the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships, and taking the team to the Final Four for the first time since 2001. His efforts earned him the titles of The Sporting News National Coach of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year, reinforcing Arizona’s status as a powerhouse in college basketball.
University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella expressed his satisfaction with the contract extension, noting, “Coach Lloyd has led our men’s basketball program with clarity of purpose and a commitment to excellence.” Garimella emphasized the significant achievements of the past season and Lloyd’s role in reestablishing Arizona Basketball as one of the premier programs nationally.
Under Lloyd’s guidance, Arizona has maintained its reputation as an elite men’s basketball program, marrying championship-level performance with the holistic development of its student-athletes. His teams are recognized for their unselfish play and resiliency, resonating strongly with fans and alumni alike.
Lloyd himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue his work at Arizona, saying, “Arizona Basketball is a central galvanizing force in our community and our state.” He acknowledged the support from university leaders and emphasized the honor of representing the University of Arizona and the City of Tucson moving forward.
