Sylvie Lorente Receives $1.2M Grant for Compressed Air Energy Storage

Revolutionizing Energy Storage with Innovative Research at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. (August 28, 2026) — In the quest to enhance energy storage technologies, Villanova University has taken a significant step forward. The University’s College of Engineering is at the forefront of this endeavor, thanks to a generous $1.2 million funding from WWJR Enterprises Inc., associated with William “Beau” Wrigley, Jr. This funding will support the pioneering research of Dr. Sylvie Lorente, Senior Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, and the William M. Brown ’84, ’87 Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Lorente’s focus is on advancing compressed air energy storage (CAES), a technology that captures energy by compressing air and storing it in tanks or underground. This stored energy can later be released to power turbines and generate electricity. Despite its potential, CAES has faced efficiency challenges that have hindered its widespread adoption.

According to Dr. Lorente, “Advanced technology developments in our world today really call for different ways of producing and storing energy. The immediate need is to improve compressed air energy storage, a technology that has been around for a long time but has stagnated because it isn’t efficient enough.”

The crux of the inefficiency in traditional CAES systems lies in temperature fluctuations that occur during air compression, leading to energy losses. Dr. Lorente, alongside co-inventor Meghana Athadkar ’26 PhD, proposes a novel solution using phase change materials. These materials, which transition from solid to liquid as temperatures increase, help stabilize the temperature during the compression and expansion process, thus enhancing energy retention and retrieval.

The funding from WWJR Enterprises will be instrumental in advancing this innovative design, potentially offering a more effective solution for long-term energy storage needs.

Beyond her groundbreaking research, Dr. Lorente has recently expanded her academic influence as a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Bologna. She also joins the board of directors for the American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers, marking her growing impact on the global scientific community.
