SGB Discusses New App, Bus Issues, and Hillman Prayer Room Plans

Student Government Board Tackles Landlord Reviews and Campus Construction Challenges

In a proactive move to enhance student living experiences, the Student Government Board (SGB) introduced a new landlord-rating application and addressed ongoing construction complications at their weekly assembly held at Nordy’s Place.

SGB President Marley Pinsky highlighted Rate Yinz Landlord, an initiative aimed at empowering students to share feedback on landlords in Oakland. Pinsky compared the app to the popular Rate My Professor platform, stating, “You can look at student written reviews, student feedback, anonymously. It’s like Rate My Professor but for landlords. This is a way to hold Oakland landlords accountable.”

Attention also turned to the disruptions caused by construction along Fifth Avenue, with board member Andrew Elliott discussing how bus routes are affected. “There’s construction on Fifth [Avenue]. Some buses are skipping the stop near Langley Hall,” Elliott informed the board. He expressed the need to investigate further to determine if the bus stop might close permanently, noting that the blockage of two lanes complicates access.

In another development, board member Kylie Baker explored the transformation of vacant spaces in Hillman Library into prayer rooms. Baker, who is evaluating these areas, shared, “I am touring Hillman to look at potential prayer spaces. We are very hopeful about the provided areas. We are hoping to get that squared away by the start of next year.”

SGB President Pinsky also mentioned the receipt of design proposals for a first-year student Honors College housing project. This new facility, described in the Campus Master Plan, will be situated at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Ruskin Drive, close to the music building. Pinsky, acting as a student representative, participated in the design presentations.

Adding to the updates, SGB President-Elect Evan Levasseur stated that the process of interviewing candidates for cabinet positions is ongoing and will extend into the upcoming weekend. More details here.

Allocations

The board deliberated on funding requests from student organizations. The Disc Golf Club at Pitt sought $2,278.90 for an upcoming competition, which was adjusted and approved at $2,004.10. Meanwhile, the Phi Chi Pre-Health Society was granted their full request of $2,100.00 from general funds.
