Pope Leo XIV Addresses University Delegations in Rome
In a unique gathering on October 31, 2026, representatives from Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame were welcomed by Villanova alumnus Pope Leo XIV at the St. Paul VI Audience Hall in Rome. The Pope highlighted the intertwined role of sport and spirituality in fostering societal values such as fraternity, solidarity, and peace.
Pope’s Address to University Communities
The Pope greeted the presidents of both universities, Father Peter Donohue of Villanova and Father Robert Dowd of Notre Dame, along with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters. He acknowledged the excitement surrounding the upcoming basketball games between the two institutions, emphasizing the potential impact of sports within academic and wider societal contexts.
Pope Leo XIV referred to historical and contemporary Christian authors, noting, “Various Christian authors throughout the centuries, including a number of my predecessors, have noted the many praiseworthy effects that result from participation in athletic activities.” He reiterated the Catholic Church’s vision of sport as a mechanism for promoting human dignity and values such as cooperation and mutual sharing, essential in a technologically-driven age (Life in Abundance).
Sport as a Unifying Force
The Pope’s address underscored sport’s role as “a medicine for both body and spirit, when it is practiced well” (Address to Members of the Italian Swimming Federation). He encouraged the idea that competition should not foster enmity but rather serve as an opportunity for camaraderie and understanding among rival teams (Life in Abundance).
A Call to Holiness and Community
Coinciding with the Solemnity of All Saints, Pope Leo XIV reminded attendees of the universal call to sainthood, emphasizing that holiness and athletic excellence both require dedication and “daily training in love” (Homily for the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, Jubilee of Sport). He encouraged the university communities to strive for an “imperishable crown of glory” beyond earthly victories (cf. 1 Cor 9:24-25).
Concluding his speech, Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude for the participants’ presence and entrusted them to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Augustine, St. Thomas of Villanova, and Blessed Basil Moreau, imparting his Apostolic Blessing upon them and their university communities.
