A Journey from Reddit to Real-World Impact: The Story of Paul Clancy
During the University of Virginia’s Final Exercises weekend, Paul Clancy will be recognized as one of the few students from the Class of 2026 to earn a dual degree from both the Darden School of Business and the School of Medicine. However, on Reddit, he is known as “Spartan10142,” a username that has become synonymous with his pioneering educational initiatives.
Clancy is the visionary behind AdmissionsAcademy.org, a platform designed to support aspiring doctors, particularly those lacking financial resources for expensive advisors, in their journey toward medical school. His organization offers free study guides, MCAT strategies, and application advice, having assisted around 270 students nationwide since its inception in 2024.
The roots of AdmissionsAcademy trace back to a Reddit post titled, “My adventure to a 525/advice/knowledge/life tips,” which Clancy shared in October 2020 after achieving a top percentile score on the MCAT. At the time, he was a senior at Michigan State University, and he intended to help others rather than boast about his success. “We’re all in this together,” he wrote, fostering a sense of community among premed students on the platform.
The post quickly gained traction, earning feedback like, “Thank you – this is what I was going for!” and “(This is) the best novel I have ever read.” This response set Clancy on a path toward tutoring, which he continued after enrolling at UVA’s School of Medicine, eventually forming the foundation for AdmissionsAcademy.
Clancy reflected, “I realized I had the skill set and the passion, and I could make this into something more. A (Reddit post) is nice, but it doesn’t have structure, doesn’t have the scale.” This led him to question how he could expand his impact.
William Adu-Jamfi, a testament to Clancy’s impact, benefitted from his mentorship while pursuing a master’s in biomedical engineering at UVA. Adu-Jamfi, now accepted into four medical schools, remarked, “Only 40% of people even get one acceptance,” highlighting the value of Clancy’s guidance.
Adu-Jamfi, the child of West African immigrants, worked closely with Clancy on application essays, securing letters of recommendation, and other essential tasks. He pointed out, “Black men only make up around 2% of physicians today,” emphasizing Clancy’s unique role as a mentor.
Clancy credits his medical training with providing the insight needed for AdmissionsAcademy and his education at the Darden School with giving him the tools to grow it. “I went from having these ideas to actually executing them,” Clancy noted, reflecting on his educational journey.
AdmissionsAcademy, which began as an LLC and is now transitioning to a nonprofit, has been recognized at the UVA Entrepreneurship Cup and the 2025 Tom Tom Festival in Charlottesville. “What Darden has done is given me the confidence to do this,” said Clancy, a South Lyon, Michigan native. “Like, ‘You can start a company. You’re a guy from a small town in the Midwest who can have an impact on people from all over the world.’”
According to Paul Clancy Sr., his father, Clancy’s determination and ability to balance the demands of two rigorous UVA graduate programs while leading AdmissionsAcademy comes as no surprise.
