Officer Fiona O’Donnell: NAUPD’s Empathetic Officer of the Year

Amidst the daily hustle and grind, police officers often find themselves at the forefront of community interactions, striving to make a positive impact. Officer Fiona O’Donnell, recently recognized as NAUPD’s officer of the year, embodies this commitment. Celebrated on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, her story offers insight into the life and motivations of a dedicated law enforcement officer.

Joining the Ranks at NAU

Fiona O’Donnell began her journey at Northern Arizona University (NAU) as a freshman in 2019, having moved from Hawaii to Flagstaff. After obtaining her degree in criminology and criminal justice in 2023, she embarked on her career with the NAU Police Department.

Inspiration Behind the Badge

O’Donnell’s academic experiences at NAU revealed a profound understanding of the challenges faced by individuals involved in crimes. She observed that many people are reluctant to approach law enforcement due to concerns about their interests not being prioritized. This inspired her to join the police force, aiming to alleviate these fears by demonstrating empathy, patience, and care during interactions. O’Donnell explains, “My goal is to be the kind of officer who helps people navigate the worst day of their lives with dignity and understanding.”

A Day in the Life

Each workday for Officer O’Donnell starts with preparation, often including a stop at Dutch Bros. Her routine involves checking emails and planning for any scheduled presentations or community events. When not engaged in specific activities, she patrols the campus on foot or by vehicle, engaging with the community. Her days vary, from engaging in conversations to responding to calls, always concluding with documenting her experiences and decompressing on her drive home.

The Rewards of the Job

For O’Donnell, one of the most fulfilling aspects of her job is conducting ride-alongs with university students. These encounters allow her to share her passion for law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of community welfare over mere enforcement. She takes pride in the department’s focus on education and meaningful relationships. Students often express surprise at the officers’ dedication to the community’s well-being, which reaffirms her career choice.

A Childhood Dream

Reflecting on her early aspirations, O’Donnell recalls wanting to be a teacher during her middle school years, driven by a passion for communication and teaching. Though her path changed, she is content with the outcome.

Leisure Pursuits

On her days off, O’Donnell enjoys the simple pleasure of reading a good book, accompanied by hot tea and strawberry shortcake—her favorite way to relax.
