Studying abroad offers a wealth of opportunities for both students and faculty, providing cultural exposure and academic enrichment. Northern Arizona University’s Center for International Education (CIE) has received a significant boost through a Gilman Pioneering Institution grant from the U.S. Department of State, enhancing its faculty-led programs.
The grant paves the way for expanded opportunities in the NAU in Japan: International Economics and Global Internship program, which is spearheaded by key figures such as education abroad advisors Amanda Williamson and Megan Bennett, alongside Angelina Palumbo and Nancy Baca. This initiative aligns with the celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary.
“This funding is awarded to community colleges and universities to implement initiatives that connect study abroad with career readiness in forward-looking fields that are considered critical to continued U.S. prosperity and advancement,” Amanda Williamson explained.
The focus on cultural competency is a significant aspect of the program, benefiting not just American students but also the host countries involved. The grant aids in covering costs for faculty, student internships, and events celebrating America’s significant milestone, ensuring experiences are meaningful and oriented towards career readiness. This year’s program took place during spring break, with additional plans set for spring break 2027.
Palumbo emphasized, “Partnering with trusted global internship providers, like Absolute Internship for this program, is critical to delivering meaningful, career-ready experiences for our students.” The grant covers students’ virtual internship placements, reducing the financial burden on participants.
The initiative also aligns with NAU’s mission for global engagement and CIE’s values of innovative study abroad experiences. “The nature of this study abroad program celebrates America’s 250th anniversary and history of educational excellence and technological advancement,” Bennett stated, highlighting the program’s role in fostering connections between students, faculty, and industry leaders.
The America 250 Advancement Prosperity for the Future event is set for April 28, from 3-5 p.m. at the International Pavilion, 1450 Knoles Drive. Here, students will share insights from their internships in Japan, followed by professional development planning and an advancement workshop. The event is open to all interested parties.
