Summit Gymnastics in Flagstaff is set to transform into a hub of laughter and play on Nov. 7 as the Department of Physical Therapy hosts its fourth Kids’ Night Out. This event promises an engaging mix of games, snacks, and activities for children, all under the careful supervision of NAU faculty, volunteer DPT students, and certified pediatric physical therapists.
Originally conceived as a student capstone project, Kids’ Night Out has evolved into a biannual tradition. It provides a unique opportunity for children with developmental delays and their siblings to enjoy a fun-filled evening, while parents take a much-needed break. The event also doubles as a practical learning environment for future healthcare professionals.
The evening is entirely free and welcomes families from the community to drop off their children for a safe and supervised night of enjoyment. “Parents can enjoy a night out; children are safely cared for by NAU faculty and students; and the students gain hands-on experience working with children with developmental delays, a necessary skill for future PTs,” remarked Julie Stone, who supervises the event.
For DPT students in their final year, this night offers a chance to hone their pediatric therapy skills in a community service setting. They learn from NAU faculty and community therapists, and most importantly, from the children themselves. This hands-on experience is invaluable for their future careers in pediatric physical therapy.
Recognizing that similar events are often available to children without disabilities, the Department of Physical Therapy aims to bridge this gap. “We wanted to engage with children who may not be able to participate in the usual ‘night out’ events,” explained Stone. “We have the expertise, with support from community therapists, to offer a safe, fun event for children of all abilities. Events like this increase community participation for all families and children.”
The event will run from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Summit Gymnastics, located at 1926 N. Fourth St. Kids can look forward to activities including a trampoline, obstacle course, foam pit, spring floors, and arts and crafts. Designed for children ages 3-12, the event is especially welcoming to those with developmental delays and their siblings. To participate, families are encouraged to register via email at pt.kno.2024@gmail.com.
